Business leaders want answers after a fire destroyed a popular North Sacramento furniture store.

The Sacramento Fire Department said Casa Bella Galleria, located on Del Paso Boulevard, suffered extreme damage from a fire early Sunday morning. The city deemed the building unfit to reenter, and most of the building was immediately demolished.

Shane and Rhoda Curry have owned Casa Bella Galleria for 20 years. Shane, the shop’s vice president of operations, said he got a call saying the alarms to the building were going off.

“Coming down Garden Highway, I saw the glow in the sky, and my mind just goes nuts,” Shane said.

All that remains of the building are some walls that have murals painted on them. It was next to one of those walls where a group of other local business owners and business leaders gathered Sunday night to show Shane and Rhoda support.

“It means a lot, and it’s very encouraging. I mean, quite frankly, we were pretty depressed this morning, but we’re getting an outpouring of support, like, okay, we’re not in the wrong place. We’re in the right place,” Shane said.

Rhoda, shop’s president, added, “We’ve had such a great support from the community, it’s been absolutely amazing.”

In attendance was Del Paso Boulevard Partnership Executive Director Daniel Savala. He said it was devastating to learn that Shane and Rhoda’s business had been destroyed.

“They’re community leaders. They’re beloved. And to see, of all the businesses, theirs to be affected by the fire, it sucks,” Savala said.

Savala told KCRA 3 that he is worried that what happened to Casa Bella Galleria is part of a pattern.

“I’m hopeful that this is some sort of freak accident, that something happened, but I’m also concerned because we’ve been dealing with a known arsonist on Del Paso Boulevard for more than a year,” Savala said. “Myself, my organization, we’ve reported this individual.”

The Sacramento Fire Department told KCRA 3 that the cause of Sunday’s fire is still under investigation, but a spokesperson could not say if arson is suspected, or if the department was aware of a potential serial arsonist targeting businesses on Del Paso Boulevard. Community leaders said they hope to get answers soon.

“We want the city and the ATF, whoever’s involved, to figure out who did this, and hopefully bring them to justice if it was a person,” North Sacramento Chamber of Commerce Vice President Andy Hernandez said.

As the investigation continues, business leaders told KCRA 3 they plan to help Shane and Rhoda fast-track the rebuilding process when it comes to permitting and other requirements. The owners said they hope to reopen before the end of this year.

“We want to rebuild. I mean, we’re going to get over this,” Rhoda said. “We love the community, and we want to stay here, so we do want to rebuild.”
